I agree 110% with this comment. Aside from FaceBook and Twitter. Personal one on one face to face interaction will also get you a long long way as well.
If you approach some one with an idea or proposal, your social skills are 100% of your end result.
You must be friendly and inviting and open to any questions and be ready to answer.Being friendly and very courteous will get you in the right direction.
