The Beauty of Starting Over
Letting go is hard.
I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.
But letting go is especially hard when it’s something you’re very connected to. Just as I’m sure it’s tough letting a child go off to college or move out*, when you have to say goodbye to a totally sweet idea it feels like a little part of you leaves with it.
I mean – here’s this idea that you worked on. This idea you molded and mended and spent time with. This idea you passionately made a case for. And it just… wasn’t… right. But, more often than not, you’ll find that the coolest idea is just that - a cool idea. Keep in mind: There are so many other factors that come into play when creating powerful strategic communications that “coolness of idea” isn’t the end-all, be-all factor.
Now is the point where I let you in on a little trade secret, a tidbit of wisdom from an idiot savant. Something that succinctly puts this entire message into crystal clear perspective. Here goes:
Don’t worry. Relax. You’ll have other cool/great/totally sweet ideas.
Simple as that really. The human mind may have a limited number of cells and synapses and physical girth – but there is no such thing as a finite amount of ideas.
So one idea doesn’t work. Who cares? Think of a new one. A better one. Hell, you can even use what you learned in the failed previous “perfect” idea. Just stop pouting and do something better.
And now I’ll leave you with something to remember – a quick few points that will help you to continue coming up with more and better ideas without going crazy:
1.) Nothing is perfect.
2.) No one is perfect.
3.) No idea is perfect.
4.) But, some ideas are better than others – and that’s all you can hope for.
Good luck.
* As a single and strapping young man, I really am basing this off of cliché and stuff I see in the movies, for all I know people may love it when kids move out. But bear with me for the sake of this post.
