passion+speed
The world loves passion and speed. From hollywood movies, tv shows, computer software, modes of communication and it’s the most effective way of doing business. We know what we love and we want it now and nerds are leading this charge.
It hit me a few weekends back that “Revenge of the Nerds” sums up how to live life. Nerds got their revenge and they’re winning – have been for some time. Why? Because they follow their passion and aren’t concerned with what others think. We see this manifest in new products.
The ipod wasn’t designed because someone was playing it safe. And it didn’t transform to the nano because they had already designed something good and decided to stick with it. They didn’t know how they were going to make it a reality, but they knew they would and they figured it out along the way.
Twitter had no idea the behemoth it would become, they just believed in a different way of communicating because they were passionate and they acted. They acted as a small start up and didn’t even have a compensation model in mind.
If you have a great idea, a new innovation, a gut instinct to try something new – do it. The world responds to these leaps of faith. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King, Jr. This also proves true in business.
I know I’m not the only one who has had a great idea, but stewed on it only to see it materialized some six months down the road by a completely independent mind. It wasn’t stolen. They merely seized an opportunity from an inspirational thought. The same inspirational thought that I had, but waited on.
Why did I wait? Because I wasn’t completely sure how EVERY aspect of it would work out. I didn’t have the answer for every single scenario. I’m not saying don’t think through these issues, but don’t let these concerns keep you from following your calling. Passion and speed is a powerful mix.
