Is your data boring and hard to understand?

April 30th, 2009 by Troy Blank

Data Visualization is the process of communicating information. And, communication generally is strengthened by the amount of sensation channels it can permeate in our everyday lives. So, if your data is losing its potency, try putting it into a medium that gives you a broader range of human stimulus.

Multi-media online channels such as Flash, Processing , and Silverlight data visualization have become critical tools in helping us put complex information into flexible, living, interactive experiences. Not only can we portray this information in intuitively beautiful ways—as we’ve seen with a multitude of great static graphs in the past—but now we can also view this data across a moving trajectory, giving us a much better sense of how data actually flows.

For great examples of data visualization, check out a new and extremely useful Air app for Google Analytics called Polaris or Mortiz Stefaner’s website Tag Experimentations.

I would also encourage you to visit Mortiz Stefaner’s incredible compilation, subscribe to his blog, and see for yourself how rich media is at the forefront of data visualization.

Great post Troy. Thanks to the suggestion of Matthew Irish a couple years ago I’ve become a huge admirer of Nicholas Feltron (@feltron) – Well known for presenting each year of his life beautifully through infographics in an annual report style book, check it out at http://www.feltron.com. Also known for his development of http://www.daytum.com.
